If you have paid a visit to an electronics store recently, you’re probably already familiar with the only common video connection: HDMI. This is true of consumer products, at least. HDMI is also certainly used in the professional industry, but only for bridging short distances. When transporting video over longer distances, SDI cables are always used, as they are much more suited for this purpose. HDMI is 'only' suitable to use up to distances of 15 to 20 metres. SDI can (depending on the resolution) often be used for bridging up to 100 metres. This makes a world of difference.

SDI features

But what's the difference? An HDMI cable consists internally of as many as 19 separate cores. These are thin and vulnerable cores, through which information is sent back and forth. SDI uses a single thicker core. There are of course differences, but basically you can send the same picture information with this single core. In addition, an HDMI cable has a foil sheath, whereas SDI consciously opts for a braided version. This braided jacket is more resistant to bending and can therefore simply coiled and uncoiled more often without suffering any form of wear and tear.

Cable

This SDI cable is 20 metres long and is equipped on both sides with a Neutrik BNC connector. We use the well-known Belden 1694F cables for this SDI cable. These cables are extremely reliable and are capable (depending on the length) of distributing resolutions up to 6G-SDI.
